American football in East AngliaChanneling our inner Poirot we eventually found the UEA Pirates fixtures this winter in BUCS.  Their first game is at home in Norwich to the Kent Falcons.

Bournemouth Bobcats 15-00 UEA PiratesWe're easily confused but there seems to be two Bournemouth Bobcats.  One played the Norwich Devils last summer and the other met the Pirates in Norwich yesterday.  The Bobcats' first snap went over the QB's head but they progressed the game to win 15-00.  Despite the loss the Pirates seemed suitably satisfied with their participation and we particularly enjoyed a Pirates running back taking to the air on fourth and short.  There was a long delay in Q4 when a Bobcat was ambulanced to hospital, our best wishes to him.  At the game end the medics went off to assist the women's' soccer next door.

gridiron UKThat's a pity, today's Pirates v Essex Blades at Essex University Colchester was called off before play because of a waterlogged pitch, indeed some bits were very soggy.  The Pirates will have their first playoff game the weekend after next at home and very probably with a later than usual kickoff.

Yesterday on the fourth of the Pirates' first four downs they incurred an unlikely kicking penalty and lost possession ... it regrettably set the tone for an 18-0 loss to visitors the Kent Falcons.  This coming Sunday the Pirates play Essex Blades in Colchester, we are modestly optimistic.

A comfortable 46-14 win Sunday for the Pirates against visiting Queen Mary CollegeQMCL Vipers 14-46 UEA Pirates London Vipers.  Little place kicking perhaps because of storm Isha's winds which also blew soccer balls from next door onto the field which were accepted with a good grace.  Though medic Lizi Williams didn't visit the field during the first half regrettably during the second a Pirate was motored to hospital with a leg injury later reported as not a fracture, our best wishes.  More pleasantly ref Larry Rigby does have a broken leg (see below) but he is driving again and should be back reffing early summer.  The Pirates play QMCL again this Sunday but away.

Larry Rigby

Yesterday's UEA Pirates v Essex Blades derby perhaps inevitably occasionally became tetchy with one player disqualified.  In the end the Pirates achieved a 12-00 shut out.  Very regrettably in the second half play spilled over the sideline into the chain crew injuring long serving referee Larry Rigby.  We're told he'll be on crutches for a bit but thankfully nothing broken.

UEA PiratesFor Q1 in Norwich Sunday the UEA Pirates were making first downs UEA Pirates 40-06 KCL Regentswith ease and no injuries made the first quarter whizz past.  Eventually visitors KCL Regents began to sort themselves out but interceptions and fumbles (one heartbreakingly right on UEA's goal line) hurt them badly resulting in a 40-06 loss.  The Pirates are again at home Sunday this time to the Essex Blades.

UEA PiratesApproaching Colney Lane Norwich yesterday for UEA Pirates rookies there's a new roundabout serving yet another housing development.  Yes, building does seem to be happening everywhere and mostly housing for people with shiny cars it seems.  Regrettably the turn out for rookies was a little disappointing but no doubt there'll be a fine team spirit by their first game Bonfire Night against visitors KCL Regents.

Gridiron UKLike the week before last Sunday's UEA Pirates 19-12 Cardiff Cobras started off damp but after bit the rain relented.  As often in Britball the kicking was rather wayward with a punt that manifested as an up and under but the takeaway is the Cobras have much improved for their second season in the Premiership.  Pirates next home game is the 27th against new to us Filton Pride.

Gridiron UKAlthough there wasn't the promised thunder storm yesterday in Norwich it was wet enough to disintegrate paper notes and lists.  The Pirates 26-00 loss to Birmingham Lions to start the season wasn't helped by rooky inexperience.  It's a steep learning for newbie players but the good news is it's also a quick learning curve and the Pirates will get better.  Pix on that there Facepack.

The Birmingham Lions taking a knee for an injured playerVery windy for UEA Pirates 08-28 Birmingham Lions today the Pirates' last home game of the season.  More than enough injuries and as noted by the head coach afterwards the Pirates' game was not helped by indiscipline which we think included rookies not fully understanding the rules.  Pix on that there Facepack.

Cardiff Cobras

In Norwich Sunday the first quarter of Pirates v Cardiff Cobra's whizzed past withUEA Pirates 30-06 Cardiff Cobras no injuries and very possibly no officials timeouts.  After three years since a chain stick got significantly bent at Colney Lane we were very pleased to see new sticks.  Rookie running back John Koomson impressed with not only forceful bulling but also notable straight line speed, regrettably he retired in Q4 with an injured ankle.  Finally Pirates 30-06 Cobras with the new to the Premiership Cobras' touch down run in from inches.

UEA Pirates 10-00 Swansea Titans11:00am kickoff yesterday for Pirates v Swansea Titans with the Pirates wining 10-00 and not with a field goal indeed there was no goal kicking at all.  Impressively the woman medic followed play from the sideline but ironically was looking at her phone when needed for the only game pausing injury of the first half.

UEA Pirates before playing UWE BulletsOur first return to the Pirates for over a year.  On our short way through suburban Norwich at least two new housing estates and more in progress but that's how it is all over East Anglia.  The Pirates now have a water boy (water man) and he can delegate.  Visitors UWE Bullets don't seem to have a specials team but that didn't stop them converting all but one of their eight touch downs for two points winning 62-00.  Two ejections for the same incident with both players clearly upset by the ejection but accepting it without dramatics.

Pirates newbie hand sanatisingYesterday's UEA Pirates distanced rookies had some 15 newbs in the drizzle and a hatful of them could complete a pass.  Chatting with the team's president Oliver Howes we learnt that seven Pirates have qualified for a sports scholarship, the Uni championships has already been cancelled but there will be friendlies and the opponents don't have to be uni teams.  A natural choice would be the Norwich Devils ... we'd like to see that.

American football scholarships avaiable at UEASeems unlikely but UEA in Norwich are offering american football scholarships, you need to apply before the end of the month.
