After the ARU Rhinos (that's Cambridge) lost 33 to 2 against the Essex Blades at the season start we were expecting more of the same today in Colchester but on the very first play the Blades offensive centre snapped so enthusiastically that the ball went straight through the end zone for a two point safety. Yesterday at Stackton Tressel's monthly town council meeting the council's preparations for Brexit were discussed. These include stockpiling sticks, free walking lessons in case of petrol supply problems and a £100,000 contract with Seaborne Freight to supply emergency tree surgeons. For no apparent reason councillor Major Gervaise DeRoute described the Little Mutterings parish council as the rural political elite. A member of the public gallery expressed surprise that Major DeRoute still has a driving license.

ASTONISHER No.45: When Johnny Cash gave an unlikely concert at San Quentin state prison fellow country singer Merle I'm an Okie from Muskogee Haggard was in the audience serving two and a half years for burglary and an attempted jail break. Equally unlikely (though perhaps not in the USA) Haggard was pardoned in 1972 by then governor of California Ronald Reagan.

We arrived yesterday in Thorpe St Andrew in time for the lunch break (impressive catering) to be told it had tried to snow earlier but thankfully the rain had held off. Women's american football team Iceni Spears were hosting the Peterborough Royals and Essex Hellcats for joint training followed by a seven a side tournament. In the event there ... more here

Last Friday we spent well over an hour resetting and then configuring a new to us camera body so it would behave as we expected. Saturday after a photo op in Bedfordshire we found it had defaulted to jpg not RAW file format. Sunday in Norwich we noticed it wasn't auto-rotating portrait orientation pix. MORAL: Expect it to take time to sort out new kit.
Worried too many people might turn up at your coffee morning? Garden fete? Swingers' party? Don't do promotion on nearthecoast then.
