East Anglo Smacksons v Granite City BrawlersPleasant to revisit the rural situation of Easton College near Norwich for an East Anglo Smacksons v Granite City Brawlers closed door roller derby.  Playing 10 against 14 and an epic journey from Aberdeen the Brawlers had speedy and slippery jammers who also cut impressively (a move we haven't seen much of recently) giving them a comfortable win despite intelligent and frequent offence from both parties.  Derby name of the day from the grey bearded Nifty Shades of Grey.

London Rockin' RollersVery much approve of this, tomorrow the London Rockin' Rollers celebrate 10 years with an old school roller derby; two whistle starts, minors (remember taking a cougar?) plus tutus and fishnets.  Our memory may be gilded but we recall the two whistle start did make for more variety in play ...

All things will pass ...Throwback Thursday:  Three years ago today we were banging on about how skaters in mixed league roller derby teams should have their home league shown in the programme ... still haven't seen it.

Great Yarmouth Winter GardensIt continues to surprise us how popular roller skating was as an entertainment at the beginning of last century, including the magnificent looking Great Yarmouth Winter Gardens.  In today's long running Radio 4 drama Home Front set during the first world war a couple go roller skating on Folkestone pierMrs Adeline Lumley: I'm afraid I'll fall over.  Staff Sergeant Silas Morrow: That's the idea.

we 23 Aug

Near Houghton Regis Saturday our satnav didn't know about some new roundabouts but unlike our last visit this wasn't a problem and we got to enjoy two entertaining roller derby bouts hosted by Rebellion Roller Derby.  Our thanks to the Reb's 69 Hench for rescuing a flash we foolishly dropped into the ref lane during a jam.  Derby name of the day Firth of Force.

su 13 Aug

Surrey Roller Girls v Norfolk Brawds in ChelmsfordSaturday the Riverside Centre Chelmsford didn't have a functioning car park but it does have decent coffee and in the sports hall we enjoyed ref Blaster Chief's very clear penalty signals and a Surrey skater fleeing during the first half because she was needed elsewhere as a bridesmaid.  A Norfolk Brawds 473-065 whitewash of Surrey RG but we've been told Surrey have lost experienced jammers.  The Killa Hurtz v Hell's Belles bout was an absolute cracker!  Pretty much even stevens all the way it could have gone either way on the final jam with a Belle's 246-240 win.  Derby name of the day (a bit tortuous but East Anglian) Hurt-Ratio Nelson and for us a happy return to the Riverside.

Dunfermline roller skating brass bandLast century roller skating on Bournemouth Pier was certainly al fresco and possibly ad hoc, impressive how many ladies involved and muffs (possibly echoing ice skating) were clearly a fashion accessory but what intrigues is why the two ladies at the back of the Dunfermline roller skating brass band need a bucket?

Surrey Roller Derby in NorwichToo hot for roller derby In Norwich last Sunday but we did enjoy Surrey Roller Girl Ampersand What!'s good tempered interaction with an outside ref confirming what she was being penalised for.  Derby name of the day Crazy Cat Lady, not clever, not punningly witty but probably refreshingly true.

Borderland Brawlers scrimmagePretty obvious why on the outskirts of Stamford the shiny new sports centre and home of the Daniels is called Borderville ... it's maybe just 100 yards from the county border with Rutland.  On Saturday a clash with a children's party in the hall slowed things down but the track was already laid, the bouncy castle soon packed away and NSOs instructed.  A bunch of friends, relatives and potential derbyists got to see a lively Borderland Brawlers scrimmage and were soon picking it up ... two small boys near us were advising the jammer to pass the star.  Derby name of the day Eiffel Power.

Two little Dutch girls (from Somerset) on roller skatesWe do wonder if like laptops/tablets and glasses of wine today early last century roller skates were used to make people appear up to date with a sophisticated look and lifestyle ... like it does today:)

Surrey Roller Girls skate outThe Spectrum Leisure Centre Guildford is a warren with an ice rink, swimming pool and of course a bloody Costa Coffee.  Hosts Surrey Roller Girls had a theatrical element to their skate out of which we much approve but then they were rather overwhelmed 423-34 by Rebellion Roller Derby.  Perhaps in that situation more offence than defence because their jammer is just going to keep on lapping until you get your jammer out ... but then what do we know?  Derby name of the day Hunter Stompson (2 clever by 1/2).

East Anglo Smackson v Knights of OldhamAt the Sewell Park Academy Norwich Saturday the caretaker (he probably has a posher job title than that) untypically was friendly (he sorted out the machine giving us the wrong coffee) and actually watched the roller derby.  The officials' sweetie stash included old fashioneds and surprisingly some remembered four for a penny Blackjacks, Fruit Salads and Mojos.  Despite committed derbying from the Knights of Oldham an East Anglo Smacksons win and thankfully no serious injuries.  Derby name of the day Rolling for Soup.

East Anglo Smacksons v Weald WarriorsOur first roller derby of the year East Anglo Smacksons v Weald Warriors was in a new to us  venue, the Sewell Park Academy Norwich.  Unlike most UK sports halls Sewell Park is well lit but not quite big enough for comfortable derby with the ref lane on one straight being little more than two feet wide.  Regrettably there was a problem with the scoreboard projector (like our remote flash) because in the latter part of the bout it was often a one point game with frequent lead changes.  In the end a Smacksons win.

Vixen Mortar proposing marriage to DaniHellSunday we only made it to the second bout of Norfolk Roller Derby's Christmas Cup (Ouse Yer Daddies 226-183 Yare Yare Yares) but very glad we did, we got a bag of home baked vegan biscuits from head NSO H.P. Shovecraft to take home and we got to see Vixen Mortar's marriage proposal.  Our first proposal though we have snapped a derby wedding ... derby weddings ... they seem to have gone away.  Derby name of the day Meaner Simone.

The long bar at Epic Studios Norwich has been moved from one wall to anotherHalloween atmospheres at Mustard City (but still a decent cup of coffee for £1.50) moving one set of roller derby spectators from along the back straight to across turns one and two for a Mustard City Rollers co-ed double bout.  Suitable Halloween atmosphere, Suffolk RD skater Bella Hellatrix Pritchard confused us by wearing a borrowed shirt to skate as a guest with Borderland Brawlers and Skippy learnt not shake hands with an opponent during a jam.  Felt the derby l♥ve.

Natastrophe and Coco coaches of the Smash Hit BrollersOne of the many things we like about roller derby is it usually finds a fix: at Easton College banquettes (there are such things) taken from the foyer to make a penalty box when the usual gym forms went missing.  Saturday at UEA Norwich the lead connecting the laptop to the scoreboard projector was missing, so someone nipped out and bought another projector!  No tutti frutti.

sa 3 Sep

H.P. Shovecraft emailed pointing out that removing the star panty in the penalty box is specifically illegal in next year's WFDTA rules.  We do dearly love roller derby but how can you take seriously a sport where a skill is putting a hat on?  But then taking off a skin suit whilst running is a triathlon skill ...

su 21 Aug

A roller derby thank youEntertaining roller derby at UEA Norwich Saturday and tutti frutti ice cream.  Much passing of the star in both bouts plus taking off the jammer helmet cover whilst in the penalty box seems to have become a thing.  A bit naughty in our opinion because it's not clear at a glance it's a power jam or a jammer coming back on ... WFDTA rules.  (Don't think the rules cover a star panty dangling from the velcro on an opponent's elbow pad which happened in the Black Shucks v Hulls Angels bout.:)

fr 5 Aug

Last Sunday at Easton College Norfolk there was a cracking roller derby scrimmage between hosts the East Anglo Smacksons and from Kent Medway Mayhem with the Weald Warriors ... only eight points in it at the start of the final jam.

Saturday in Ipswich despite losing Inky Minx to the London Roller Girls this year Rebellion Roller Derby had a comfortable 282-93 win against a not a pushover Vendetta Vixens plus they made the team photo of the year.  Creepy?  Oh yes, they can do creepy.

Staff at Wolverhampton roller rinkWhat surprises us about roller skating at the beginning of last century (apart from how universal roller rinks were in the UK and US) is how many staff were employed (34 at Earl's Court) and usually included women ... presumably to teach the ladies.  A worrying detail is the absence of toe stops but then there weren't any on our Jacoskates we just wore out the toes of our shoes.

Norfolk Brawd Khilleesi and Killa Hurtz PrincessTragedy!  At the Norfolk Brawds roller derby Saturday no tutti frutti!!  Had a coffee flavour cone instead which was very good but not tutti frutti ... and there was roller derby with the Brawds having a surprisingly easy win over Killa Hurtz pole vaulting the Brawds into the second place of their division ... or it will do when the British Championship web site catches up.

Celebrations BEFORE the scrimmageUntypically the Norfolk Brawds' training scrimmage the week before last was on a Friday.  Two giant teams (maybe eighteen skaters per team rather than the regulation fourteen) with fresh meat and A/B teamers mixed in.

We like a guiding principle that's been pared down to a few words (Don't getNorfolk Brawds B v Suffolk Roller Derby involved Michael The Godfather) so much enjoyed Philthy Delphia's shouted Git It And Quit It to a lead jammer last Saturday.  She was advising from the outfield the Norfolk Brawds B team in a scrimmage with Suffolk Roller Derby.  The bout went both ways ending in a Brawds win.  Rewardingly the scoreboard had the perception to keep moving about so everyone could see it.  Thankfully no major injuries ... good stuff!
