Tomorrow male roller derby in Ipswich. A Brit Champs double bouter with hosts Suffolk playing Nottingham and Bristol playing from Stamford Brawls of Steel. Tickets eight quid on the door or six online from Suffolk Roller Derby.

Untypically the Norfolk Brawds' training scrimmage the week before last was on a Friday. Two giant teams (maybe eighteen skaters per team rather than the regulation fourteen) with fresh meat and A/B teamers mixed in.

We like a guiding principle that's been pared down to a few words (Don't get involved Michael The Godfather) so much enjoyed Philthy Delphia's shouted Git It And Quit It to a lead jammer last Saturday. She was advising from the outfield the Norfolk Brawds B team in a scrimmage with Suffolk Roller Derby. The bout went both ways ending in a Brawds win. Rewardingly the scoreboard had the perception to keep moving about so everyone could see it. Thankfully no major injuries ... good stuff!

Suffolk Roller Derby held their first fresh meat of 2016 earlier this month at the Inspire centre Ipswich. We reckon there were 14 newbs ranging from ready to go to never been on skates before. New male and female faces always welcome Fridays but to ensure there's enough loan equipment it helps to contact them first.

One of the many things that bemuse us (we're easily bemused) about roller derby is how the usually three or so Non-Skating Officials managing the penalty box keep track of six stop watches especially now a penalty has been reduced from 60 to 30 seconds. So stunning Sunday at the Norfolk Brawds' minimalist scrimmage just one NSO was doing it ... and then we saw he had six timers on his tablet.

What seemed like a good handful of skaters had bailed out on the day of yesterday's Norfolk Brawds/East Anglo Smacksons open and co-ed scrimmage but in the event there were sixteen person teams plus some skaters splitting between bouting and officiating. Encouragingly visitors from Suffolk RD, Full Metal RD and MK Concrete Cows and fun was definitely being had, at one point chicken sounds coming from somewhere in the pack:)

Open co-ed roller derby scrimmage this Sunday near glamorous Norwich ... we'll be there snapping.
tu 14 jl 15
A broken down horse box on a Martlesham roundabout contributed to us missing the first bout at Ipswich's first public roller derby hosted by Suffolk RD. As so often what looks like an enormous sports hall immediately shrinks with a derby track on it and things were crowded. In the event we were surprised (but then what do we know) how comfortably the Norfolk Brawds beat SRD 243-63 though it's clear that the longer established Brawds have a larger cadre of skaters to call on.
SRD Men v mixed league Top Gun was more evenly matched with Top Gun coming from behind to lead at the half but in the end losing 226-132. As with most if not all men's derby it was physical, at one point the pack came past jammerless but still with every skater engaged in hefty contact. Great stuff, ♥ it!

Sad Norfolk Brawds at Easton College yesterday.

We arrived early for Suffolk Roller Derby's first training session in Ipswich and it was a little disheartening, maybe half a dozen skaters waiting for the women's basketball to vacate the hall. Then suddenly everybody turned up en masse with maybe 10-12 newbies (including a mother and daughter) being fitted up with borrowed kit. The Inspire looks encouragingly big but like any hall it shrinks when a derby track is laid out but it will still make a fine venue for SRD's next home game. Inevitably falling over is part of derby but nobody laughs at a fresh meat landing spectacularly on their bottom and everyone enjoys the Who are we? ritual at the end. Newcomers welcome again this Friday.

The Norfolk Brawds open co-ed scrimmage last week had places for six (possibly eight) more skaters, expect another open scrimmage next month. In Ipswich and the adjacent county Suffolk RD have open training sessions starting next month ... and though Scroobius Hip isn't skating at the moment she has joined our 1,000+ album.

The Norfolk Brawds held their first ever co-ed scrimmage with some Suffolk Roller Derby guests at Otley College near Norwich yesterday. Great stuff! We saw our first pegassist with Kid Hell swinging Ben Jamin over the infield but Ben couldn't quite stay in bounds. A star pass to Philthy Delphia over the blockers at the whistle did work. There were a lot of star passes perhaps indicating we're still post Christmas plus a shortage of jammers obliging blockers to take their turn. The Brawds expect to continue these open (you just need basic skills, a black and a white top and a fiver, trainee officials welcome too) scrimmages as a monthly event ... bring it on.
Got a gratifying message from the Cambridge Rollerbillies last week saying they only picked up our message Wednesday and we would have been welcome to snap their fresh meat the preceding weekend. Snap you soon Billies.

Guess Who 34? reveals that roller derby is much older than you would think and not only that it was co-ed, multi player blocks were legal and jammers were identified by feathers rather than stars.

The Norfolk Brawds have come a long way since we first saw them at play three years ago. They hosted their first intra-league bout Saturday in a tv studio which unlike a sports hall didn't have a horrible echoey acoustic so for the first time at a derby we could actually understand the announcer. We found the team names difficult to retain but it was a comfortable win for Black over Brown. Our favourite moment was Teki for Brown breaking through as lead jammer and giving a double two fingers to the Black bench ... so why didn't we snap it?

The Paradise Centre Ely has a dry bit and a wet bit, Glen the manager of the wet bit didn't know why it's called the Paradise. The sports hall in the dry bit was sufficiently small that when hosts Red, White and Bruise laid out the track the penalty track in the back straight was no more than 12 inches wide. That'll never work we thought Where are they going to put four outside refs? but we were very pleased when it did work just fine.
As with many scrimmages there was no scoreboard making the bout difficult to follow and at the end head ref Reffy Paws with the lofty impartiality of a referee didn't know who'd won let alone the score:) Turns out it was visitors Suffolk Roller Derby.
we 29 oc 14
In Cambridge Saturday the support bout of Billies B v Vendetta Vixens B Lost Girls contained the new to us Billy Diana Sprints. Slight of build and small enough that the star panty looked too big on her helmet not surprisingly she is a slippery jammer but also a determined blocker.
In the main bout's first half Belfast were pulling away from the Rollerbillies when they failed to get a jammer on the track. Handing the Billies a free two minute power jam turned the momentum but the Belfast hung in leading to tense final jams and a 187-183 Belfast win.

Roller derby has more rules than the EU making a ref's difficult job essentially impossible during the frequent bursts of frantic activity. Inevitably there will be calls that bemuse the benches and crowd, when events allow it would help if refs could signal long enough so third parties as well as the offending skater are informed. Know we keep banging on about this but mixed team skaters in the programme should have their home league named... and ref Mimey is not ordering an Americano with just one sugar at the Norfolk Brawds' very excellent triple bouter Mutiny on the Bouty yesterday.

As we know East Anglia tends to be more laid back than say a large town near Chelmsford though these days even the Wickham Market co-op car park can get a bit frantic. At April's Eastern Sur5val roller derby in Norwich the teams found time to play Twister.
fr 27 jn 14
In Bury St Edmunds last Saturday Suffolk finally felt derby l♥ve when home team Suffolk Roller Derby met from Chelmsford the Killa Hurtz Roller Girls and a support bout from two mixed league men's teams. The Abbeycroft Leisure Centre is too small for derby, the track was undersize with the spectators crammed in at one end and on balconies ... but it was brilliant! SRD covered their costs from ticket sales and the raffle raised some £200 (raffle draws may be the tedious inevitability of a British event but they do raise money). The only thing that made the day fall a micron short of perfect was that though neither visiting team was a pushover it was reasonably clear during the first halves it would be home wins, a point in it last jam cliffhanger and a home win would have probably made us wet ourselves.

Sunday the Norfolk Brawds hosted a mixed league scrimmage plus a full bout against visitors Roller Derby Leicester. RDL were short handed (as it seemed all four teams were) and although newly hatched (November) we recognised some experienced faces. It would help at a bout with no public game clock if time left on the half was announced before the five second warning, several times the visiting coach asked for it ... just saying. High spot for us was the youthful RDL supporter who had a selection of signs to display including 'BORING' during time outs.

The Saturday before last the Sur5val roller derby format came to UEA Norwich. A little difficult to follow as the scoreboard had software problems and to prevent colour clashes the teams didn't wear their league jerseys but still highly enjoyable derby. Impressively Suffolk Roller Derby came fourth in their first public bout and hosts the Norfolk Brawds celebrated winning by falling to the floor prompting a mass pile up/bundle.

Want to feel some derby l♥ve? The roller derby Sur5val format debuts in East Anglia with fifteen teams including Suffolk Roller Derby at UEA in Norwich this Saturday afternoon. The Saturday before Christmas in Norwich the Norfolk Brawds hosted a three way (four way if you count the Brawds skating for White) mixed league scrimmage. It had a definite Christmas air with committed skating, many official timeouts because the track tape must have been bought at Poundland, the Brawds sometimes taking ballet first position at jammer line starts and a shy HellLucyation on the score board.
It was the third flat track scrimmage for Malicious Wishes who has come from banked track derby, she told us she's still having to get used to taking her penalties immediately (in banked track penalties are served after the jam) ... derby name of the day Coco Shrapnel.
