PC TipsChrome's spell checker... and another nice thing about the Google Chrome web browser is it has a built in spell checker; just the job for bulletin boards, Face Book and Twitter.

Chrome and IEThough Google Chrome is easily the best web browser (until the bean counters cock it up) there's no reason why you can't have two or more different browsers open PC Tipsmaking it easier to locate stuff.  I do everything in Chrome except BBC iPlayer so I always know where Lucy Holloway, Mark Lamarr or rad7 are coming from.

PC TipsBT Infinity promises up to 40Mb broadband but when it arrives in East near Chelmsford this December it'll be BT Infinity20Mb download and 9Mb upload.  That's 2.5 times faster download than the present nominal 8Mb (at best actually 6Mb) but 18 times faster upload, perhaps this reflects with that there FacePack vids and pix, YouTube and Vimeo we're uploading bigger lumps these days.  The bad news is Infinity is delivered by fibre optic cable, so around ntc unless you live next door to an exchange don't hold your breath.

PC Tipsscammers Domain Renewal GroupIf you have a web site and you get one of these ignore it, essentially it's a fiddle.  It will almost certainly be cheaper to renew the domain with your present registrar at typically half the price, and they will certainly be contacting you about renewal.

PC TipsAs it's a very stripped down web browser Google Chrome is blisteringly fast compared with FireFox and limping alongGoogle Chrome should be in a care home Internet Explorer.  Google Chrome even downloads and installs fast.  In fact all we have against it so far is it handles favourites/bookmarks in a slightly clunky manner, there's no print preview and ironically there's no Google Toolbar for it.

PC TipsThat's nice, you've been adding us to you favourites but there's an even easier way to find out what's been happening near the coast;Alt + M add us to your home pages.  It's a doddle in Internet Explorer Alt + M (whilst holding down the Alt key press M) opens the home page window.  Teensy bit more complicated in Firefox, go Tools/Options and under Startup there are three home page options, in Chrome click on the little spanner then Options to see the On startup and Homepage options under Basics.

PC TipsPicked up a bit of nastiness twice this weekSystem Restore that pretended it had found a virus on our main machine and wouldn't let us do anything except watch it ... so we restarted the pc whilst holding down user key f8, user key f8 opens a DOS type screen and we chose to start Windows in Safe Mode.  Then we used System Restore to roll the system back to before the nastiness appeared; surprisingly straight forward.

Orange know how to charge PC TipsBe aware of this, at the end of an 18 month broadband deal Orange put their price up because we're 'in the country' prompting us to change supplier.  Orange then charged for the month after the change had completed and they supply nothing because that's what they do ... we suspect other ISPs probably do the same.

PC TipsBefore you throw your dial up modem away do remember it's what you use to send a fax, and even now we find occasionally we still have to (the police still use ... more here.

PC TipsIn both Internet Explorer and FireFox pressing user key f11 (keyboard top row towards the right) makes the toolbars and all the other crud go away, pressing it again brings them back.

Be warned: Orange PC Tipswant their bundled in rubbish router that never worked properly back or they'll charge £100 ... and they've got your credit card details ...

su 15 fe 09Select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and then click propertiesWindows XP thinks everything is fine with your network connection but when you try to use the browser or email you get Not found messages.  If you use a router or hub to access the Internet then check the TCP properties of Obtain an IP address automaticallythe active network adaptor on the computer (it's entirely likely your PC has two network adaptors, wired and wireless).  Unless you're pratting about with fixed IPs Obtain an IP address automatically should be set on the General tab so the hub or router can set the IP ... should have got this quicker at Craig's last week but we're not very good before 10am.
